ASA Scientists Collaborate with UCSD and National Science Foundation (NSF) in Development of a Next Generation Global Ocean Observation System

ASA is part of the development team for the Ocean Observatories Initiative Cyberinfrastructure (OOICI) lead by University of California San Diego (UCSD). One of several notable academic and industry partners on the project, ASA is unique among them in that it is integrated into core positions on the development team. The cyberinfrastructure effort based at UCSD is part of the larger OOI, a National Science Foundation project. The OOI is a transformative infrastructure project that will provide an expandable and interactive network for observing complex ocean processes such as climate variability, ocean circulation, and ocean acidification on a continuous basis. The new observatories promise to change the way ocean science is done, providing observations that range in scale from fleeting and microscopic to those that span decades and entire ocean basins. The OOI infrastructure will provide an interactive research environment where autonomous vehicles and remote controlled instruments collect data that scientists and students request and access through their computer. Delivery of this integrated environment is just part of the 5 year, $32 Million dollar development plan for the open source cyberinfrastructure which will support access to and analysis of past, present and future ocean data. ASA is an integral part of the UCSD based development team for OOICI working on the construction of two major components. ASA’s David Stuebe is the Senior Developer leading the Data Management team, one of the six subsystem that make up the 5 year development program. Chris Mueller is the Senior Developer for External Observatory Integration, part of the Integration and Testing program which will connect OOICI external sources including NOAA's Integrated Ocean Observing System, Neptune Canada and the World Meteorological Organization.

At the OOICI kickoff meeting in Colorado (2009), ASA's David Stuebe listens to the project manager Matthew Arrott and Jack Kleinert (Raytheon) discuss the evaluation of risk in the OOI.

Around the table from left to right: David Stuebe (ASA), Ingolf Krueger (UCSD), Jack Kleinert (Raytheon), Matthew Arrott (OOICI Project Manager), Duane Edgington (MBARI), Rich Signell (USGS), Brian Schlining (MBARI), John Delaney (UW, Principle Investigator OOI Regional Scale Nodes), and Ben Domenico (Unidata). Standing in the back is Frank Vernon (Deputy Principle Investigator OOICI).
