The 4-part news series aired on September 25-27 with 3 consecutive nights of news segments that introduced the issue of global climate change and warming, and outlined the potential impact to local communities. ASA was mentioned in part one of the news program and was credited for their recent work in storm surge flood modeling. ASA believes that mapping the effects of coastal storms is important work because of the high vulnerability and risk associated with many coastal areas, including this locality. Of the 10 costliest hurricanes over the last 50 years, 8 have occurred in the last 5 years. By mapping the flood zones of real storms, property owners and officials alike can easily visualize the risks associated with actual events and learn how to reduce vulnerability. In the fourth and final evening of the special news series, ASA was featured as a "Local Success Story". In this segment, ASA's CEO Eoin Howlett, gave an overview of the important work that ASA has been doing. Eoin explained how the Narragansett based marine science consulting firm's approach has always been to provide services that result in pragmatic tools that are used to solve problems or avert crisis. He explained that ASA's software products can visualize storm surge from potential hurricanes and aid in search and rescue. He went on to say that ASA provides the computer tools for search and rescue used by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The special report went on to point out that ASA has assisted in several recent search and rescue and environmental modeling emergencies. Of these, ABC6 mentioned the North Cape Oil Spill off the coast of Narragansett, the Missing URI students in March 2006, JFK Jr.'s downed airplane in 1999, and the search for the Revolutionary War ship, Bon Homme Richard, which went down off the coast of England in 1779. The news special summarizes by describing ASA as
"the perfect marriage between oceanography
and computer science that will keep Applied Science
Associates firmly on the cutting edge."
