Technology will Aid Channel Swimmers - 16 February 2010

Perth, Australia - Competitors of the 2010 WAToday Rottnest Channel Swim, an annual open-water swimming race from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island, located 20 km off the coast of Western Australia, can now take advantage of new technology to plan and manage their course. The Perth office of Applied-Science Associates, a global marine and environmental modeling company, will provide animated forecasts of the wind, current, and wave patterns at regular stages throughout the day as a service to the Channel swimmers. The real-time and forecast information will be published as detailed maps over the internet to allow competitors to strategize and adapt their best swim route.

Travelling Science Exhibition Provides Flooding Visualization Kiosks - 26 January 2010

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI -- An interactive science exhibit demonstrating the potential flooding impacts from climate change is debuting this month. Funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation to Brown University, Applied Science Associates (ASA) in collaboration with exhibition planning and design firm Jeff Kennedy Associates, developed an interactive flooding exhibit that highlights the impacts of rising sea levels under different climate change scenarios. Seasons of Change: Global Warming in Your Backyard will tour science centers and museums throughout the Northeast beginning in mid January 2010. The exhibit will kick-off at the Ecotarium in Worcester, Massachusetts and consists of kiosks that provide hands-on interaction for visitors to see precisely how their local cities would be impacted by increased flooding caused by sea-level rise and coastal storms. The travelling exhibit is a project of Brown University's Center for Environmental Studies and Clean Air-Cool Planet's New England Science Center Collaborative in collaboration with the Environmental Defense Fund.

Air France Flight 447 Recovery Assisted by U.S. Coast Guard and Advanced Search & Rescue Technology - 9 June 2009

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI -- U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue (SAR) experts based in the Portsmouth Virginia Rescue Coordination Center assisted officials at the Rescue Coordination Center in Gris Nez, France, with the search for Air France Flight 447 by providing information and advanced technology to help locate the plane's fuselage as well as recover passengers and crew who were lost in the crash.

Solo Trans-Atlantic Row Success Aided by Predicted Winds and Currents - 5 May 2009

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI -- Trans-Atlantic solo expedition rower Paul Ridley successfully completed a charity fund-raising ocean crossing from the Canary Islands to Antigua. Ridley’s three-month solo effort ended successfully with support from his friends, family, as well as guidance from the Antigua & Barbuda Search & Rescue (ABSAR) organization using technology developed by Rhode Island ocean science and technology company, Applied Science Associates (ASA).

Small Town's Megawatt-Sized Wind Turbine Success - 19 March 2009

Technology Aided U.S. Sailing Team Wins Olympic Gold - 26 August 2008

NARRAGANSETT, RI - The 2008 Olympic Sailing Regatta concluded in Qingdao, China with strong performances from Team USA despite challenging conditions. Twenty-five-year-old Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.) led the team on the water with a gold medal in the Laser Radial class, the first gold medal for a U.S. female sailor in 20 years and twenty-four-year-old Zach Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) produced a strong performance in the Finn Class, earning a silver medal for the U.S. Sailing Team.
