NARRAGANSETT, RI. -- ASA welcomes Trevor Gilbert to its Asia-Pacific, Gold Coast Australia office. Trevor brings 27 years career experience working as an environmental scientist, marine pollution emergency responder, chemist and oil exploration geochemist with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industry Research Organisation (CSIRO), electricity and coal mining industries and a term with the United Nations South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
As Senior Scientist: Maritime, Environment and Chemical Services, Trevor Gilbert will bring to theAsia-Pacific ASA team a broad range of chemical and environmental knowledge and skills from the oil and gas, shipping, and power generation industries as well as oil spill/HAZMAT response and maritime casualty experience.
Prior to joining ASA Gilbert was Chemical and Environment Response Manager for AMSA and Principal Advisor, Scientific and Environment in Canberra. Over the past 12 years he was the Australian federal governments’ chemical/environmental advisor on the National Response Team for marine pollution incidents (oil, noxious, and hazardous substances) in Australian waters. He has provided scientific, technical and environmental advice and support in a number of maritime accidents and spill incidents in the Pacific, Asia and New Zealand.
At AMSA Gilbert managed a series of projects on marine spill response and preparedness on behalf of the National Marine Pollution Contingency Plan, which also involved the provision of expert witness testimony in court proceedings for ship sourced marine pollution investigations and prosecutions in Federal waters and other state jurisdictions.
Among Trevor Gilbert’s major successes at AMSA was the establishment for Australia of a national chemical/HNS marine spill response plan, support systems and response training programs. He was AMSA’s principal trainer for HNS maritime incident response for 12 years. Trevor was also responsible for a variety of initiatives of the Australian Contingency National Plan, with tasks including the strategic management of an Australian wide Oil Spill Response Atlas (OSRA), and the National Oil Spill Trajectory Modeling System (OSTM) which were based upon ASA products HYDROMAP and OILMAP.
“I worked with the APASA team in Australia over the past decade implementing the system for AMSA and constantly improving the system and underlying datasets. It was my responsibility to maintain the OSTM system as a 24-hour 7-day a week national service for federal and state government stakeholders so I have an in-depth understanding of the needs of government, ports and the maritime industry for this modeling technology and other GIS services,” Trevor stated as a new ASA employee. “I am proud to be a member of such a dynamic and talented global ASA team.”
Trevor Gilbert has authored and co-authored 99 papers and book chapters in the international and local scientific literature relating to hazardous substance incident emergency management technology, decision support systems, pollution response, shipwreck response, marine pollution risk assessment, and oil and gas exploration geochemistry.
