Problem. Purpose.

Spain’s maritime safety and rescue agency (SASEMAR) commissioned ASA for an improved system for search & rescue (SAR) as well as oil spill response and prediction tools. Every SASEMAR Regional Response Center (MRCC) was to have access to the tools, as well as the corresponding databases.

Science. Services. Solutions.

ASA developed customized versions of its Search & Rescue Model System, SARMAP and its Oil Spill Prediction Model System, OILMAP to address specific requirements:

  • Distributed version of the tools, serving 21 Regional Centers that covers all Spanish waters. This includes 3 majors areas: the Atlantic Ocean, Canary Islands region and the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Dedicated metocean data processing tool, to allow the integration of daily forecast from the ESEOO initiative.
  • Dedicated Search and Rescue Pattern reporting. Electronic versions of the search patterns can be typically sent to CASA aircraft in charge of the Spanish aerial SAR missions.
  • Interactive online e-learning/training materials, to be used to train all SASEMAR SAR operators.

Products. Results.

A customized version of OILMAP and SARMAP are fully operational at SASEMAR’s 21 response centers in Spain, to support the search & rescue and oil spill response operations. The system is maintained at a central server in Madrid where OILMAP and SARMAP are connected to a Spanish Incident Management System, SIGO. The project delivery included:

  • A catalog of the existing Search and Rescue Units (SRUs)
  • An environmental data management tool
  • Latest SAR technology and updates integrated into SARMAP system
  • E-learning/training of software also provided by ASA
