CAPModel™

The CAPModel was developed for the New England District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide a simple tool for determining the volume of material required to effectively cap a dredge spoil mound. The model interface is simple and focused on determining an appropriate cap volume for the specified dredge spoil volume. Starting from a set of default inputs the user can quickly develop a capping project to meet their needs.
The CAPModel is based on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers MDFATE model. MDFATE simulates the disposal of dredge material from barges and dredges and the subsequent spoil mound that is formed on the seabed. When utilized in the CAPModel, MDFATE is run once to simulate the disposal of dredge material that forms the base mound (material to be capped) and a second time to simulate the placement of the cap material. Display tools in the CAPModel allow the user to view the dredge spoil mound and the overlying cap in plan and section views to assess cap effectiveness. A measure of capping success or failure is calculated based on a minimum cap thickness defined by the user and a on a cap-to-mound thickness ratio.
